Bohuslän Big Band has won the “Readers’ Choice” award for the album Shades of Gil Evans, one of the most prestigious jazz prizes in Sweden, presented by OrkesterJournalen since 1954.

The Golden Record has been awarded for over seven decades and is regarded as one of the most important distinctions in Swedish jazz. That Bohuslän Big Band is now receiving the prize for Shades of Gil Evans highlights both the album’s artistic level and its long-term significance.

The award is based on the readers’ votes and the audience’s appreciation, which feels especially fun! Bohuslän Big Band’s artistic director, Eric Brandström Arellano, describes the award as a strong affirmation:

“Receiving the Golden Record award – Readers’ Choice, which is based on the audience’s votes, is proof of the band’s artistic quality over the years and evidence that the music is alive and still has a natural place today. Fun!”

Shades of Gil Evans is based on music by Gil Evans, one of jazz’s most influential arrangers and composers. The album highlights his own works alongside the better-known collaborations with Miles Davis. Evans’s importance for the sound world of jazz is central, and his arrangements continue to inspire modern big bands around the globe.

The acclaimed album has an unusual background. The recording was made almost 20 years ago in Mimers hus in Kungälv, originally as a test project rather than a planned record release. Only much later did the idea emerge to release the material – something that has now resulted in The Golden Record.

Proud and happy, the band thanks the readers who voted!
